- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Peter A. -- A thrilling and emotional mystery, set on the cusp of historical events. : From HardCase, I expected a great noir detective story and it was. What I also got was a murder mystery set on the cusp of Pearl Harbor and a behind-the-lines tale survival tale. But the best thing about Five Decembers was the very true and affecting emotions I felt for the characters. Though it moves at breakneck pace, it still delivers sweeping scope and is satisfying with each part. And the fact that it takes place amidst times of historical significance allows the author to let the reader follow his characters, but also have opportunities to know how the world will change before the story's characters realize it for themselves. So good, I had to buy the Hardcover this week when it came out even though I already had an e-book ARC. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joseph Guglielmelli -- One of the best novels of 2021 : This novel not only belongs on the shelf next to the classic detective novels of Hammett but also the WWII trilogy of James Jones and the Vietnam novels of Tim O'Brien. What begins as a slam bang detective story soon becomes a novel of man caught up in World War II. The characters are all fully fleshed out, the writing elegant. Would love for this story to continue. This one is my favorite of the year. Hands down. Stunning. As soon as I started reading it I passed the word to reader friends, one of which, wondered like me, how this author slipped under our radar—how could this be a first novel? He researched it and found the author is none other than one of my favorites, the author of Poison Artist, (if you haven’t read Poison Artist you are missing a real treat. This was a book that I saw as images in my imagination the entire way through. I’d thought it would make a good movie but I now think a 6 episode series would make more sense and besides, the story deserves to remain as intact as possible. It’s that good. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ray Chandler -- So much brilliantly more than a crime novel : Panoramic in scope, yet every single detail rings true: a vivid evocation of Hawaii, Hong Kong and Japan in the 1940s, brought stunningly to life by fully realised characters and their involvements in a series of violent crimes at different scales. The author wears his research lightly -- no dumps of information -- and his prose is taut, assured, poetic when it needs to be and always mesmerisingly good. One of the best crime novels I've read (ever), but even though there are crimes, criminals, victims and detectives, and several plot twists brought off stunningly well this is so much more than a crime novel.
