:
  • from C. M Mills -- TOP 500 REVIEWER : The Hitler Years : Disaster is the second and concluding volume of a history of Nazism in Germany ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Casey Wheeler -- Good overview : This book is a good overview of Hitler’s rise and fall during World War II. It does cover some new ground, but also provides a good summary of the events and what happened as a result of his orders. It does hopefully put to rest some of the ongoing dialogue of what happened at the end of the war. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in World War II. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Mark Jackson -- Interesting and informative, with one major annoyance : This book is well written and well structured, and provides a valuable overview of the period for the general reader. McDonough rightly calls out the huge contribution made by the Soviet Union to the defeat of Germany. What sticks in my craw is the way he does this. His constant belittling of Britain's efforts really does grate after a while, and detracts from the overall narrative. He sneers more at Britain than he does at the perpetrators of the holocaust. If he really thinks that British POWs had an easy time of it he should read the excellent book by Chinnery Philip. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 1, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from S Riaz -- The Hitler Years Vol 2: Disaster 1940-1945 : Having the read the first book chronicling the ‘Hitler Years,’ in the previous volume, ‘Triumph’, which covered the years 1933 to 1939, this volume moves onto the war years 1940-1945. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Justin Case -- Easily accessible history, eminently readable : Having read the first volume of this work and been highly impressed, I had this one on pre-order as soon as it was announced. My mum gave it to me as a Christmas present, and I've been reading it for the last two weeks. That puts me at an advantage over several of the earlier reviewers who, er, haven't actually read it! Doh. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 13, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Terence hammond -- A terrific and terrifying account. : This book completes the story of the period that Hitler controlled every aspect of German life and the appalling consequences of his actions on the rest of Europe. It is hard to imagine in today's world the government of a major country calmly discussing the elimination of an entire race of people as if they were deciding the education budget. The numbers killed during the war are hard to comprehend and the author makes the point that the greatest battles were fought in the East where the casualties on both sides were staggering. 80% of German soldiers killed during the war were killed by the Red Army. But despite Hitler's rhetoric, Germany remained a conservative country. Class was not eradicated and the workers did not benefit from his version of socialism. More and more Hitler was driven by his warped ideology and rabid anti-Semitism, something which his generals and servicemen and women did not, in the main, embrace, although there was a significant minority that were prepared to carry out his orders without question. This is a terrific book. It flows and is much more accessible than many novels. It is not uncommon these days for the term Nazi to be bandied about as an insult. To anyone who believes it appropriate to use such a term I suggest you read this book. Aside from Stalin, I can't think of anyone who runs Hitler close for outright insane brutality.
